Apple wins HTC S3 patent dispute

As you no doubt know, Samsung isn’t the only company Apple is having patent fights with as they are also in a patent battle with HTC over HTC claiming Apple infringes on their S3 graphics patents. However it appears that Apple has come out unscathed in that particular legal battle with HTC.

According to an article over on Slash Gear by way of the Wall Street Journal, the US International Trade Commission has ruled that Apple does not infringe on those HTC S3 patents, the news of which apparently sent HTC shares falling by over five percent.

Apparently the loss of the claim against Apple has called into question the rationale behind the HTC acquisition, which cost the firm some $300 million although Winston Yung, the chief financial officer of HTC has defended the acquisition of S3 graphics.

Thus as it stands the US ITC has reversed their preliminary decision that some Apple gear did violate S3 patents, and has stated that it has found no violation on Apple’s part and that the investigation has now been terminated, thus handing Apple yet another win.

Grace Lei, HTC’s general counsel said in an emailed statement that the company is disappointed but respect the International Trade Commission’s decision on the matter, however, Lei has said that HTC will review their options including the possibility of an appeal.

As usual when contacted a spokesperson for Apple took the usual route and declined to comment, which is something everyone has come to expect.
