Nokia earns more from Apple than its Lumia range
Late last year Nokia launched its first devices on the Windows Phone platform with the Lumia 710 and the 800, and have since followed these with the Lumia 900 and the 610, but it seems that Nokia earns more from Apple than it does with its Lumia range after sales disappoint.
Earlier today we told you how Samsung had overtaken Nokia to become the biggest seller of handsets in the world, and in turn ending fourteen years of Nokia’s reign. Now it is being reported by AppleInsider that Nokia has earned more from licensing patents to Apple than selling its range of Lumia Windows Phone 7 devices.
The company actually lost money selling handsets during the last quarter that saw a $1.7 billion overall loss, which came despite the launch of the new Lumia models. The first quarter of last year saw Nokia shifting 108.5 million handsets, which compares to this year’s 82.7 million units that equates to a fall of 24 percent.
Nokia managed to gain around $600 million from Apple as settlement in a patent licensing dispute that included a number of standards and essential patents according to sources close to the deal. If the company doesn’t see a change in fortunes with regards to Windows Phone devices it could change tact by going after other smartphone manufacturers.
There is a chance it could sell off its vast patent portfolio to another company, which could potentially include Microsoft itself. Last year Google snapped up Motorola Mobility in a $12.5 billion deal, which like Nokia has been losing money producing smartphones. Nokia has only just started its assault on the US market though with the launch of the Lumia 900, which has been met with high demand so far.
Once the device is released into other regions Nokia’s revenues could really take off, but many still feel that the company should have took to the Android platform after ditching Symbian. Do you think the Nokia Lumia range will be successful?

I use both a Samsung Android 2.3.4 Tablet and a Samsung Windows Phone7.5. After using both for more than a year now, I much prefer the interface and the integration of the Windows Phone and wish my Android Tablet had the same interface, every time I use it.Â

I can’t wait for Windows to emerge into the tablet market. I’m probably hoping against hope, but it would be great if I could simply update my current tablet to the next version of Windows. I believe that integration with Windows desktops and laptops, driven by business will see Windows taking over more and more of the tablet and smartphone market over time.

all the people I heard say windows phone is less intuitive than apple and android. I have experienced the same. Just imagine to share a contact for example you need to install an additional application.
+ scrolling down menu simply is not user friendly, you need to scroll all the time without any control where to stop to find an application (instead in apple/android we simply know in which homescreen you have added the shortcut)
+ less applications on market with higher prices than on apple/android stores
+ windows 8 will not be compatible with win 7 applications!
+ win8 can’t be installed on current devices including nokia lumia900
+ lumia900/800 is not a design friendly device. nokia lumia900/800 is just an ugly rectangle with sharp edges (no other companies have ever issued devices with sharp edges to consumers!). the edges are also restricting the user to easily touch some screen areas, not user friendly at all!
+ are the lumia phones targeted for kids? blue, red, etc, devices made by cheap looking polycarbonate (some mouths say is poisonous, nokia has not refuted)
+ elop has done a series of wrong decisions already by announcing the end of symbian without to have some results from the nokia windows sales first
+ nokia under elop is just a hardware manufacturer that will probably end soon acquired by some Chinese company
+ nokia under elop has no vision on creating new and innovative software platforms to sustain nokia business
+ current reorganization at nokia is just about decreasing numbers and saving costs, no vision, same lazy ppt people but in different positions, no personal performance review, lot of people without any hw or sw technical skills are still there without any plan of considerably reductions inside nokia!
+ elop is just selling stories (nice stories but not giving any practical support)
+ adopting windows in nokia has started with two ears before elop (nokia migrated all internal tools to microsoft), so some shareholder approach on this probably driven by common Nokia-Microsoft shareholder big American investing companies has been enforced silently during the last three years. where this conspiracy might be going???
+ all in one, until nokia is not inventing something new, a totally new attractive phone design and user friendly interface, it will barely survive, and the time is ticking very fast for nokia!
+ nokia should forget about single partnership with Microsoft and introduce other system under his portfolio
+ nokia should quickly start to care about introducing other mobile devices and capabilities under his portfolio (gadgets, tablets, home appliances, tv and games systems), otherwise will not survive on the ecosystem battle of the giants!!!
-until next time-
