The word is Republic Wireless are re-opening their beta for new customers and rather than offering the old LG Optimus S smartphone, have unveiled the Motorola Defy XT535, and are apparently the first to offer the Android operating system toting Defy XT535 in the United States.

According to an article over on The Verge, Republic Wireless is allowing new customers off their waitlist, but in waves, and when a customer is invited they will be able to purchase the Motorola Defy XT535 without contract for 249-bucks, and the firm will retain their 19-bucks per month unlimited talk, text, and data plan.

Furthermore Republic Wireless will also stick with their decision to keep the service truly unlimited, even if the customer is using airtime rather than WiFi for calling, and apparently when not using WiFi calling and data it falls back to Sprint’s CDMA network.

Spec wise the Motorola Defy XT535 is an Android 2.3 Gingerbread smartphone, with a 3.7-inch TFT touch screen with Gorilla Glass, a 5 megapixel rear facing auto-focus camera with LED flash, a VGA front facing camera, 802.11b/g/n WiFi, Bluetooth, 1GHz processor and features a ruggedised design with water and dust resistance.

For those that are already Republic Wireless customers and own the LG Optimus S, you will be able to upgrade to the Motorola Defy XT535 at a cost of 149-bucks; however if you are not a customer you will have to wait in line, as this particular wave is for current waitlist customers only.
