Kobo challenges Kindle with new Arc Android slate

As you probably know, Amazon revealed their latest offering to the tablet space yesterday with the Amazon Kindle Fire HD being the main event, and it now appears Kobo has also stepped into the Android tablet game by announcing their first Android based slate, a 7-inch tablet known as the Kobo Arc.

The guys over at Phone Arena reports that Kobo announced four new products, one of which was the Kobo Arc tablet, along with the Kobo Mini a small and light full featured ereader, the Kobo Glo that uses CoverLight tech to deliver a comfortable reading experience in daylight or night, and the Kobo Touch, their first touch screen ereader.

Apparently the Kobo Arc tablet has been design to challenge the latest crop of 7-inch Android slates such as the 7-inch Amazon Kindle Fire HD, and of course the Google Nexus 7 tablet, and the Kobo Arc sports a 7-inch display along with front facing speakers and a 1.3 megapixel camera, and runs Android Ice Cream Sandwich.

The Kobo Arc also sports a Kobo developed skin named Tapestries on top of Android, whilst also delivering access to Google Play, and comes pre-installed with Twitter, Facebook, Skype and PressReader that delivers 2000 full content newspapers from 95 countries.

Price wise the Kobo Arc commands a price tag of $199.99 for the 8GB model, whilst the 16GB version will set you back $249.99, and the back over of the Kobo Arc is interchangeable snapbacks in black, blue, purple and white, and the Android 4.0 Kobo Arc will become available sometime in November.

So there you go, if you don’t fancy the Amazon Kindle Fire HD or the Nexus 7 you can always give the Kobo Arc a go. Any of our readers interested in the Kobo Arc?

  1. Would this not be Kobo’s second outing with a colour screen eReader! The first being the Kobo Vox which is also Android driven (albeit 2.3). Looking at the Arc hardware spec compared to the Vox is that the Arc has built in stereo speakers, web cam, duel 1.5Ghz processor and 1Gb RAM (Vox is 800Ghz single processor 512Mb RAM), slightly better screen resolution the ability to stream multimedia content to a TV and updated Android OS (4.0).
