Motorola Razr i vs iPhone 5 vs SGS3: spec-tacular choices

There seem to be an abundance of new and upcoming smartphones at the moment and today we heard about the arrival of yet another, the Motorola RAZR i, due for a release next month. If you’re overwhelmed with the choice available we’d like to give you a look at the Motorola RAZR i vs. the iPhone 5 vs. the SGS3 (Galaxy S3 or S III). We’ll detail some of the key specs and features of these three phones to give you some idea of which might be the right option for you.

The Samsung Galaxy S3 is of course already released and has been for some months but without doubt this is a big customer favorite and still a good selection for Android enthusiasts. Meanwhile the RAZR i is another Android handset that will be released in some regions in October. If you want an Android alternative or are simply an Apple fan then you could well decide to upgrade your current phone to the iPhone 5, due for release in just a few days on September 21. However as we discussed earlier today, pre-orders sold out within an hour and there are many who won’t be able to get their hands on this phone for a few weeks yet.

We’ll begin with the key specs and features for the Motorola RAZR i, announced earlier today as the first Motorola smartphone with an Intel processor. We know that this will have a 2GHz Intel Atom processor, a 4.3-inch AMOLED display with resolution of 540 x 960 and an 8-megapixel rear camera with it taking under a second to start the camera app and a dedicated camera button plus 1080p video capture. There’s also a VGA front-facing shooter and the RAZR i includes 1GB of RAM, 8GB of internal storage (expandable via microSD to 32GB), NFC, WiFi 802.11 a/b/g/n, Bluetooth v2.1 and a 2000mAh battery.

We think this is a good-looking handset and it features robust Kevlar casing which is also water-repellant, a handy bonus. It will release running Android ICS with an update to 4.1 Jelly Bean to follow at some point. Dimensions are 122.5mm x 60.9mm x 8.3mm and it weighs in at 126g and it comes in black with a white option to follow. You may like to check out our earlier article with a hands-on video look at the RAZR i and you can also see the Motorola press release for the phone here.

Moving on to the Apple iPhone 5 we can tell you this has the new Apple A6 processor, a 4-inch LED-backlit IPS TFT display with resolution of 640 x 1136, 8-megapixel rear camera with 1080p video recording capability and also a 1.2-megapixel front-facing camera. There’s 1GB of RAM and it comes in 16, 32 or 64GB storage options (not expandable), has WiFi 802.11 a/b/g/n, Bluetooth v4.0 and a standard Li-Po battery. A fact that will please many people is that the new iPhone now has LTE connectivity.

Another bonus for the iPhone 5 is that it will launch running the brand new iOS 6 that is heading for a public release tomorrow, just two days before the release of the phone. Dimensions of the iPhone 5 are 123.8mm x 58.6mm x 7.6mm and it weighs just 112g. There are two color options, Black with Slate and White with Silver and although there has been criticism of the new iPhone as there was not a huge design change, the overall look is still stylish and shows up it’s top-notch materials and production. To see more about the iPhone 5 head to this Apple page.

Finally we move on to the Samsung Galaxy S3 and we’ll start off with the 1.4GHz Exynos quad-core processor, 4.8-inch HD Super AMOLED display with resolution of 720 x 1280, 8-megapixel rear camera with 1080p video capture and 1.9-megapixel front-facing camera. Other inclusions are 1GB of RAM, 16, 32 or 64GB of storage (expandable via microSD), LTE connectivity, WiFi 802.11 a/b/g/n, Bluetooth v4.0 and a 2100mAh battery.

The Galaxy S3 launched with Android 4.0 ICS but should be receiving an update to 4.1 Jelly Bean in the next few weeks. It released in two color options, Marble White and Pebble Blue and other colors that have been added include Amber Brown, Garnet Red, Sapphire Black and Titanium Gray but bear in mind those may only be available on certain carriers. Dimensions are 136.6mm x 70.6mm x 8.6mm and it weighs 133g. One of the only criticisms of the Galaxy S3 when it came out was it’s rather bland design and plastic feel but of course this is very much down to personal taste. If you want to read what Samsung has to say about this flagship device head here.

Obviously this is just a comparison of basic specs but all of these have other things to offer such as the Galaxy S3’s S voice, the Siri personal assistant on the iPhone 5 and the water-repellent casing of the RAZR i. There are many other examples of additional individual offerings and you’ll find details of these at the manufacturer’s links in this post. Hopefully though, we’ve provided you with plenty of information so that you may now already know which option you would choose and we’d like to hear from you about this.

If you are in the market for a new smartphone might you choose the RAZR i, the Galaxy S3 or the iPhone 5? If you’ve made a choice let us know what was the deciding factor for you by sending your comments to us using the box below.

Don’t try and make it look close lol.
Lol Samsung 3 has had jelly bean for a while now and more to the point its faster then ever with jelly bean which was the main reason it was used for it, so it would be even more slicker now compared to the iphone. I have a galaxy nexus gsm with the very latest of the various dif roms u can have on it and updates galore always rolling in and I must say the software absolutely blinding. And for 250 squid it can’t be bad can it. I went past an apple store in Norwich lol there was more fanboy reps then customers. Anyhow I went in and asked for a bunch of bananas and they said they didn’t sell them so I pointed towards all the rep fanboys dressed in f@ck@ng YELLOW and she asked me to leave the store hohoho

Benchmarks already placed iPhone 5 higher than any Android phone out right now. Specs don’t cover that much unless you are running the same OS. Even though the iPhone has lesser specs its still most likely going to be the smoother experience. I simply am not choosing it because of the screen size being so small. However, it is foolish to say the the SIII automatically wins. This happens with every iteration of the iPhone.

“Benchmarks already placed iPhone 5 higher than any Android phone out right now.” No, the S3 easily beat the 5 by a score of 100+ points on geekbench. You are sadly misinformed.

Beats in processor calculation because of quad core, see memory tests, and tell me how many of your day to day apps use all functionality of multi-core processors? Apples iOS is tight with hardware, that’s why performance is so great. It is really the choice of end user, same as what to buy Ferrari or Lamborghini 🙂 Personally for me iPhone wins, just because I had great experience before, and hope to have the same with new model.

        1. kc says:

the problem with that analogy (“Ferrari or lamborghini”), and I think many consumers lack in this area, is that apple products are not a ferrari or lamborghini, yet they sell for that price and what they are getting is a “bmw” at best to keep with that analogy. Many consumers are brainwashed into seeing only a “ferrari or lambo” and don’t realize they are getting scammed

Love how all the S3 users troll every site and article trying to slander and put down the iPhone.

    The preorders speak from themselves.

People want a quality phone with a quality feel to it and that’s why they stay away from Samsung who have this love for cheap plastic phones.

Plus their screen sizes are just ridiculous ! Next thing Samsung will be doing is turning their galaxy 10.1 tab into a phone

    1. tobie azeez says:

The S3 had 9 million on pre order opposed to i5 2 million. And had sold 30 million in two months internationally. And that 9 million didn’t include the U.S.

    2. Kaffeguy says:

There are 7 billion people on this planet. So you know what iPhone population is? in the Millions. Like a needle in a haystack! What is the difference between Apple and the rest? Customer preference. They are not trolls.

Whats apple produced as next big thing ???
They’ve got 4 more months…S3 launched in end of May and iPhone just before somedays…
They’ve got enough time to beat S3 in specs…
Nd they launched phone that is even less then 4 month before launched product!!
      8 MP…4.0 inch…
And apple is so ashamed that even they DINT declare their PROCESSOR and RAM configs…
Watch iPhone 4 and 4S launch video… every time they announced processor and RAM with proud….

This time they just said its faster then previous A5…

CANT THEY DECLARE IT IN STANDARD CONFIGS like last products???
      in GHz and GBs..

See whats apple is hiding from you…
And still my showoff product is BIG !!!
Accept the truth from market gurus and numbers of sold product + any techie website…

And best of all open ur eyes !!!

    4. JP says:

Well, there was a similar argument about the (light) weight of Galaxy S2 when it was released….that, it doesn’t feel like holding a phone when compared to the iPhone4s. What do iPhone fans have to say about the light weight of the latest model?

IMO iPhone5 is a beautiful and qualify device, but with ‘just enough’ features. There are people who prefer bigger screen, power and flexibility that S3 and some other Android phones provide; iPhone5 is not going to satisfy this segment. I like the quality and simplicity of the iPhones, but, personally, prefer a phone which gives me more control and flexibility, even it if means compromising on the aesthetics.

    5. tboneisaid10t says:

^^ Isn’t apple trying to do the same thing? Isn’t the iPhone 5 thinner and lighter? Did you realize both phones are made in Korea as are most electronic that you have? Have you are ever held the the Galaxy S3? Isn’t that the point of FaceTime on the ipad?

I have an SGS3 and I have friends that have the iPhone 5, I’m not impressed and find the iPhone 5 lacking, that potential was very high but Apple did not do much innovation. it could be the fact that people like you look at pre-order volumes instead of that actual phone.

      BOOM ROASTED!!!

  4. RatBoy says:

wouldn’t it be nice if they all got together and made 1 phone for all.
iPhone cannot share its files with anyone and you have to have an app for everything such as opening word documents playing you tube. but is arguably the nicest device to hold. exceptional quality.

Galaxy s3 was made of bin lids and feels cheap despite its huge cost but gorilla glass screen over the ever smash-able iPhone wins for me, also the ability to build home screens set backgrounds etc is ever preferable. if the iPhone was sold by any one but apple it would fail but extensive range of apps and apples ability to spend billions on advertising puts it at the top of many peoples wish list.

if i could request a nice ally case for the s3 i would be a happy man, or Kevlar as Motorola are bringing to the table however the Motorola has no more or less features than the competitors so like the Xbox 360 and ps2 scenario everyone already has a new phone.
my personal choice was Nokia until the lazy buggers sold out to windows now i hope they crash and burn for the appalling choice of operating system.

    1. If you put an apple logo on any Samsung device, it would probably be the best selling device on the market too. Considering almost 90% of the new features on iOS 6 and the iPhone 5 are (and have been) available on Android devices for the past 3-4 years proves the fact that people are buying iPhones for the name, not for the feature set.

  5. NeoTheHacker says:

NO NFC NO SHARING…BLUETOOTH THAT DOESNT SHARE!!!
AND STILL MY APPLE CANDY IS BEST !!! – apple fanboys cant accept the truth…
    Steve gone…apple’s charm gone…
For me… im techie guy… GALAXY S3 wins in every aspect….
just in camera its like 99-100 for S3-iPhone

You just lick your candy apple fans… Noway other candy will taste better to you!!!

  6. android humps apple says:

Well from what I see the razr I can kick both iPhone and the s3’s ass .2ghz come one that’s crazy
But since the s3 is an android brother to the razr looks like the iPhone is getting beat to a pulp

  7. Stude says:

I support the mobile phones in our company and I spend hours a week supporting the iPhone and only minutes a month supporting the Android devices. An iPhone may be great for a non-business user but in the business world they are poorly designed and difficult to support. I will say I had little issues with the iPhone 4 and numerous issues with the iPhone 4S. Hopefully they have fixed the flaws in the iPhone 5.

  8. Joe says:

I own the motorola razr and one of the main reasons for my selection was the receiver sensitivity for weak cell signals. We live in an area of Florida where the cell signals are weak and erratic as well as the signals in the North Carolina Mountains where we live during the summer months so receiver sensitivity is very impirtant.

  9. Rudolph says:

I must say I’m really interested on this Razr i model. It’s basically what I was looking for: sturdy case, not huge screen, running Android.
