Misleading TV ad for Apple iPhone banned by ASA

A report in The Guardian states that a television advertisement for the Apple iPhone has been banned by the UK Advertising Standards Authority due to receiving complaint that the advert was misleading.

This TV ad, which can now be viewed here, claims “all the parts of the internet are on the iPhone.”

Complains were made to the UK Advertising Standards Authority pointing out that the Apple iPhone does not support Flash or Java that could be required to use some websites, which lead the UK Advertising Standards Authority to conclude “the ad gave a misleading impression of the internet capabilities of the iPhone”.

Apparently, Apple actually responded for once and said that the purpose of the advert was to point out the iPhone’s ability to access standard websites, and that it could not ensure compatibility with “every third-party technology in the marketplace”.

Which of course means the Apple iPhone doesn’t have all the parts of the internet, doesn’t it. So therefore the UK Advertising Standards Authority is right in banning the advert.
