Galaxy S3 on Verizon Jelly Bean update wait, please explain

The long-running saga of the Android Jelly Bean update for the Samsung Galaxy S3 is now over for many owners in the U.S. However there is still one major carrier that hasn’t yet pushed out the update to its Galaxy S3 users and that is Verizon. Now that the update has finally reached the Galaxy S3 on the other major US carriers, Sprint, T-Mobile and AT&T we wonder if Verizon and Samsung should be explaining what’s happened to the missing update for Big Red users.

We know from comments to previous posts on this that many Galaxy S3 owners on Verizon are pretty frustrated about this situation and especially the lack of information as to when the update will become available. Sprint and T-Mobile managed to push out the Android 4.1.1 Jelly Bean update first and recently AT&T caught up, leaving Verizon Galaxy S3 owners still using Ice Cream Sandwich.

Seeing as the Verizon Jelly Bean update for the Galaxy S3 was first leaked back in September you can forgive owners for thinking their devices should have received the upgraded operating system by now, especially as Verizon is the largest US carrier. Verizon owners of the Galaxy S3 are not just behind other US carriers either as the Galaxy S3 Jelly Bean update has been rolled out in many other regions, with Poland first. More recently we told how Galaxy S3 owners in Canada are now receiving the update.

In fact the rollout of Jelly Bean update 4.1.2 is now starting to arrive with the Galaxy S3 international version before Verizon even received 4.1.1. for the GS3. On November 20 we told of what was thought to be the final build of Jelly Bean for the Verizon Galaxy S3, VRBLK1, but there has been nothing since and just a few weeks ago we told readers that a test build of 4.1.2 Jelly Bean looked to be close for the Galaxy S2 from a leaked ROM. Just imagine the outcry if 4.1.2 starts rolling out for the Galaxy S2 or the original Galaxy Note if the Verizon Galaxy S3 hasn’t even received 4.1.1!

We think that this is a pretty sorry story to be frank. For the largest carrier in the US to be so slow pushing out the Jelly Bean update to one of its latest devices is a poor show. It may be the amount of bloatware that Verizon likes to pack onto OS updates that is the cause of the delay but as far as many Galaxy S3 owners on Big Red are concerned, that’s just not a viable excuse, especially as the bloatware is largely unwanted in the first place. We think it’s time for an explanation before Verizon customers begin to feel that the carrier has no regard for them at all.

We’re really interested to know what you think of this. Are you a Verizon Galaxy S3 owner eager to receive Jelly Bean to your device? Maybe you think as long as it comes soon you’ll be satisfied? On the other hand you may be one of the many readers who are frustrated about the update and would appreciate at least a statement from Verizon and Samsung pinning down a time for the update and explaining why it has taken so long? Send your comments to let us know your views on this.

I upgraded to the leaked VRBLK1 software without rooting or unlocking the bootloader. Very simple, and the new build is very stable. I got tired of Verizon holding up, and seeing as if they are the largest US carrier is just sad that they can’t bring out an update before the other carriers. I was going to wait for Verizon’s official build, but if they dont have the decency to help out their customers, why should I be loyal to them?

      1. anonx says:

You can find the leak build over at xda forum or Google search. There are a few build by different developers for the leak version. I prefer cm10, their build is off jb 4.1.2.

          1. anon says:

The latest leak is VRLK3. It’s over at the xda forums as well… I have the S3, but opted to purchase the phone at full price so as not to loose my “unlimited” data plan (they can’t force you to change plans if you’re only swapping phones). Since nothing else on my plan is unlimited, and I had to pay full price for the phone, I figured I go ahead and root, install the leaked update (which is great, BTW… much smoother UI), and use wifi-teather to provide all my other devices “unlimited” access as well. 😉

First, lol Droid razr maxx HD, got my update bahahahaha, Naw but really tho my wife has this phone from Verizon, she is very upset I got my update b4 her. S3 came out in July or August still no update that’s crazy

  3. Matt says:

As a Verizon customer with an awesome Marble White Samsung Galaxy S III, this has been frustrating and agitating to say the least. Although this is a first world problem as there are truly more important things to be mindful about, this has nonetheless made my own personal device that I paid for, feel obsolete compared to the same exact versions from different carriers. Verizon should come clean with whatever dirty tricks they are pulling and seriously release the update, not even an omniscient being knows what the hold up could be.

  4. Frustrated Verizon Customer says:

As a Verizon customer I am very disappointed. I don’t care what their reason are. What I do care about is the lack of communication regarding this. Just tell your customers when to expect the update so we are not checking for it everyday.

  5. Dlec40 says:

I am an owner of the Galaxy S3 with Verizon. When i bought the phone back over the summer, it was told to me by the C.S.A. of Verizon and reading on the Web that this phone would be “The FIrst” to get the update. Well that was not the case. Nexus received the first update. However, being it was a Samsung phone getting it first left me hope the GS3 was soon to come. Now Verizon is rolling out the update to their Motorola handsets before we get ours. Those phones were produced for sale after the GS3 so my thought was why did they come first with the update? Google was very fast to explain how popular this update would be because of the new features people like myself anticipated to compete with the I-Phone. For me to be satisfied, I think Verizon should not only release the update sooner than later, but if I were them, to bring back the large customer satisfaction, they should release Jellybean 4.1.2 or even Jelly 4.2 for this phone. I know if I saw we were getting the latest version of the system at this time to surpass the other carriers, I might not hold my frustration for such an unwarranted delay. We the customers who keep that company running deserve to at least hear why there is such a delay where the other carriers have moved so far ahead.

    1. Spanky says:

Nexus phones are commissioned by Google and manufactured by a selected OEM. They run stock Android with no manufacturer overlays (i.e., Sense, TouchWiz) and will always be the first devices to get OS updates. The reason for this is that the updates for these phones are rolled out directly by Google, not the manufacturer or carrier.

    1. Francisco C says:

I actually contacted support and they said they would send my complaint to the “Leadership Team” which is the team responsible for pushing updates. I think if we all did this, we could get 4.1.2 a lot faster!!!

  6. Bryn says:

Yes i am also frustrated by this lack of an upgrade. We purchased a year old Galaxy Nexus for my wife a month ago that has Jelly Bean on it. It has made me even more frustrated as I can see first hand what Jelly Bean is capable of in relation to Ice Cream Sandwich…I am VERY happy with my phone, but not being able to use the functions that every other user has on every other carrier, is unacceptable

  7. dvdmate says:

I’m more inclined to think this is the result of a contract dispute or an ongoing negotiation between Verizon and Samsung than a simple matter of adding bloatware or allocating enough resources to push the update. Otherwise we would’ve had it already. Verizon does take a long time to test and push updates overall, but this is truly a special situation. We shouldn’t have to wait this long for an update on the most popular device on the planet on the largest network in the US.

  8. steve says:

It is ridiculous that it is taking Verizon so long to update my phone and they are silent on when the upgrade will be available. Although they are the largest carrier when my contract is up I will into a carrier that actually cares about their customers paying good money for a premium device. I like Samsung devices and feel they are top notch but Verizon is ruining the experience. I makes me winder if Apple is paying Verizon to not release an update so they can sell more iphones

  9. craig says:

I own a Verizon Galaxy S3 along wit 3 other phones on Verizon. My bill is around $400 a month. I can tell you that I am done with Verizon when the contracts are over. Never to return to Verizon.

    1. mike says:

Just unlock the bootloader and update your ROM. I’ve been running Jellybean ROM for weeks and my wifes ATT Sims card now works in the phone as well, data and all. Need to set APNs for other carriers (check the net)

      1. rando says:

We shouldn’t be forced to void our warranty for features that other carriers have on the same hardware. I used to jailbreak my iPod Touch back in 2007 when it had only 6 apps and the concept of Apple’s App Store hadn’t been conceived (or rather stolen from the jailbreaking community).

        1. Giuseppi Bag a Donuts says:

warranty shmarranty… oh palease. u will get a refurbed piece of crap from vz. anyway. they never send the phone to mfr. and just say its not holding a charge…. come on ….seriously

  10. Annoyed_VZW says:

So much for being the largest carrier in the U.S! I am tired of getting in touch with folks at the Big Red. There is no question that all S3 owners on verizon and pissed and frustrated but what bothers me the most is Verizon not releasing a public statement on this issue. Hell yeah! As a customer when I invest in electronics I expect to get my money’s worth with what it has to offer in terms of updates and new features. Seeing my friends on other carriers who are already enjoying JB makes it even worse. So who pays for all that lost time before we actually see JB on S3? I guess other carriers will be already pushing 4.2 while we make a fool of ourselves everyday by checking for system updates.

  11. GT says:

Ridiculous but not at all unexpected, this has been my Verizon experience since I started with them. But I’m stuck with them as the provider (group business acct) so I have no real choice.

  12. Glen says:

Im with Big Red and have a GS3 but got sick of waiting for updates. Running 4.2 JB no bugs great camera and google now . verizon will be dropped at the end of my contract

  13. CWILL says:

For being the largest US carrier, there is no viable excuse. I have been with Verizon, too many years to count, and my bill is ridiculous. Definitely when my contract up, I will be done with Verizon for many reasons. Smh.

  14. John says:

Add me to the list of ticked of people. I just got my phone a week ago, so I can’t complain too much, but I can still decide to return it, can still decide to return it, cancel the extension of my contract, and move on to a new provider.

  15. PaulITNY says:

So frustrating…bought the phone back in July, and at that time they were saying the update should only be a couple weeks out…well here it is, almost 2013! WTH Verizon! And to be quite honest, i do love the phone, but for how robust the hardware is, the OS (4.0.4) is not very impressive and lags quite a bit…JELLYBEAN we NEED you!

    1. jim says:

If my s3 was any smoother it would be project silk. Not sure what everyone’s crying about, not keeping up with the Jones? Its awesome in its current state.

  16. Upset longtime loyal customer says:

It’s a shame how Verizon states they have the best and fastest coverage and terribly slow about updates to there customers devices. They love you take your money then it’s oh well. They need to service what they sell in a timely manner. Lets start a boycott hit them in the pocket. $$$. Shame on you Verizon.

  17. imleavingverizon says:

I think this is crazy! I had the motorola droid bionic and was so frustrated with not receiving ice cream sandwhich that i upgraded to the sg3 and lost my unlimited data just to find out now that maybe verizon is the sole blame for slow updates. Also in my oppinion i think verizon is trying to make people switch and lose their unlimited data and also to make people buy the latest phones. By Sprint and T-mobile releasing the jelly bean update as fast as they did confirms that the carriers are the blame and making the manufacturers like samsung and motorola look bad. Who needs bloat ware? i sure dont just give us the update already! Verizon charges the highest for their plans and is the largest network so you would think they would take care of us customers but i guess we’re not that important. This is unacceptable!!!

    1. jay says:

I switched from the biopic as well. Thank God for a bright Verizon employee who figured out a way for me to keep my unlimited data!!!! Pissed about the whole jb th ing though. Unacceptable.

  18. mulfj says:

I am g going Verizon a few more days then I’m cancelling my contract and going to another Carrier. I’ve been with Verizon for over 8 years but am tired of the lack of concern for its consumers

    1. Julian Coronado says:

I’ve been with Verizon for a long time now and look at Sprint or T-Mobile with all their low prices but when it comes the stores (at least the ones I go) the customer service is great and they always understand when it comes to phone insurance. This update however is from Verizon directly. So im mad too. I have the marble white version so I’m extremely frustrated!

      1. Bruno Valente says:

I sold my white s3 on eBay, got way more then I paid for it, covered a big chunk of the cancellation fee. Went back to att and got a yellow Lumia 920. I kind of miss the s3, but am getting better signal and sound quality from the nokia

  19. I have only been with Verizon since May and I am really unimpressed with how they handle these things. They sucker you in with promises of updates to phones then never deliver. I originally had the LG Spectrum and was told that it should be upgraded to ICS by end of Q2 which was only a few days from when I purchased the phone. Well 3 months later I finally decided to use my out of contract Xoom to upgrade to the GS3. I love the phone but seems that Verizon uses the same tactics with all its new phones to get people into new contracts then never deliver on their “word”. I can say that there is hope, my dad has my old spectrum and my phone still has hers and they finally recieved the ICS update about a month ago. According to that timeline us GS3 owners will be getting JB in about 6 months!!

  20. Jeremy says:

I emailed Verizon support and received the following non-response today (December 7):

Happy Friday and thank you so much for contacting Verizon Wireless! My name is Sean-Nika and I received your email inquiry about an anticipated software update for your device. I definitely understand the importance of your inquiry as a software upgrade allows you to access cool new features on your phone and take advantage of any needed fixes. It is my pleasure to further assist you with this matter.

Verizon Wireless thoroughly tests the phone updates that we receive from our devices manufacturer to make sure that the resulting customer experience is improved and better than ever. At this time, there is no further information available or a tentative date for the software update that you will receive for your device. Thank you for understanding that we want to bring you our best as we definitely will push any new updates out to your phone in the most expedient fashion.

  21. Its funny, when i dont meet a deadline at my job or fall behind, i have to answer for my mistakes and i fear losing my job. Why is it not the same with Verizon? who is there to answer to us, the mass amounts of people that keep them employed? someone or some division of Verizon Wireless should be held accountable for not even supplying us with any information on this update. The Galaxy S3 was supposed to be Verizon’s flagship device and they still market it as so. Where’s the support? Why has samsung not released any info on why this process is taking so long? Samsung should be furious in seeing how many disappointed customers there are that own their phones. Im disgusted and I want answers yesterday!

      1. rh says:

Thats not the point joe. The point is that all the other carriers have released an update that has had no flaws since their release of JB. Verizons excuse is that they test it to no end to make sure the customers have a perfect update, in which it is understandable. To not have an answer to your customers after a release date stated officially, from Verizon, November 16th S3 updave! I could care less of an update to be honest with all of you, however, I have to say Verizon should communicate with their customers of why the update is WAY later than everyone else.

  22. stevezi says:

Wouldn’t surprise me if they wait until after the Holiday for fear of horror stories coming out during Q4 / Holiday push. It might even help them push other Jelly Bean phones with larger margins on their end.

  23. Anthony says:

This is why I have a custom ROM CM10 on my Verizon GS3. Been running JB 4.1.2 of pure android bliss for 2 months and loving it. Screw Verizon they will never care.

  24. RunSilent23 says:

While I wish Verizon would release the update, I have watched several of the forums for ATT users who upgraded to Jelly Bean. The general theme I come away with?

    “IS THIS IT?”

I have to say my Verizon S3 is blazingly fast and a few incremental features are not going to make me hate Verizon for slow updates. They have a great LTE network and nothing is currently broken on the phone. Rooting is an option for those who don’t want to wait but I figure it will be soon enough before an OTA will be available from Verizon.

  25. Jesse says:

I own a galaxy S3 and I’m tired of waiting for Jelly Bean. I hear from my friends is how good siri is and I’m always hearing on reviews that jelly is supposed to be better the. Sir and I would like to know for myself! Just Verizon telling me when the updated is coming out will satisfy me.

  26. Jeffrey Perry says:

I too will be dropping Verizon when my contract ends. The lack of the Jelly Bean update and crappy 4g coverage in the Phoenix area are more than enough to make me look elsewhere.

  27. Ray~Ray says:

All our comments don’t mean much to the Darkside-Verizon…I’m sure their initial response to all our inquiries are taken with a grain of salt and an attitude of My United States Of Whatever performed by Liam Lynch! …Yeah WhatEvah!!!

  28. Deb says:

I just got my S-3 and I do love it, but yeah, I am very tired of playing the Verizon game. I had to give up my unlimited data plan, and re-up for two more years, but I really needed to get out from under the POS LG Revolution that the Verizon salesperson told me 2 years ago was “the best phone evar”. Yeah. So, I think I will be discussing with my family the option of going month to month with prepaid phones after our contract is up. We have other devices that will do the same thing as our nifty little phones, and I am tired of being jacked around by my wireless provider! Honestly, I don’t know of any major wireless provider whose customers say this doesn’t happen to them; it seems that they all feel they have their customers over a barrel, so to speak, and don’t really care about how they are perceived. Hmmm, I wonder if I can go in and return my phone and not re-up my service contract?

  29. Jordan says:

I agree with just about everyone here. I have just recently moved to AT&T due to the bad service in my area, but If I were a Verizon customer with the S3. I would have left the company a long time ago. The bad press around this since Verizon won’t come out and give a reason for the delay is just making the situation for them much worse :/ I think from now on, I will remain contract free on the nexus program #yaygoogle.

  30. Laurie says:

Before Siii came out I was planning on buying it. Why? I was told it was an awesome phone and it was going to be one of the first phones to get the Jelly Bean update because it was the most advanced top-of the-line smart phone. I feel I was lied to. When I read that AT&T, Sprint and other carriers already got this update I feel cheated. I spent a lot to buy this phone and I could have moved to AT&T from Verizon and bought the iPHONE, but I was assured the Jelly Bean update would only be a month or two away (Aug.-Sept) Were distributors lied to? Were Verizon reps told to be deceitful and manipulative ? Due to the lie I am growing more and more angry with Verizon. I used to actively push Verizon as an honest company with great customer service, excellent phone coverage and their salespeople were knowledgeable. Never again will I recommend them.

    1. AT&T Guy says:

Wow because of an update with slightly new features?? Forget the fact that Verizon offers way more lte than all U.S. carriers combined…not to mention the best ranked customer service as well.

  31. NS says:

    #FirstWorldProblems

I’m an S3 owner too, but I’m actually happy with what I have. Yes, I would like the update, but I’m not crying about not having it. I’m just happy I’m fortunate enough to have a nice phone that does cool things. Get over yourselves.

  32. Earllex says:

    Earllex
I wish I could convince all Verizon customers to boycott Verizon by not paying their December bill. Maybe that will jolt them enough to realize that it’s their customers who keep them afloat. Do I have anyone with me?

    1. sami says:

I was thinking the exact same thing, If many people do not pay their pays, Verizon would be in trouble and would have to report less money in their accounting books which means less stock value, us the customers can have the power if we stick together.

    1. Sailmaker says:

Lowell McAdam is current CEO of Verizon Communications. Maybe send Mr. McAdam an email to let him know his wireless unit is disappointing millions of customers and ask for an explanation for Verizon Wireless poor showing in providing timely firmware updates.
      FYI: Chief
Executive Officer Lowell McAdam’s total compensation more than
tripled to $23.1 million after the company’s shares rose 11
percent since his promotion from chief operating officer. Certainly he could spare a little change to complete Jelly Bean upgrade for Samsung S3

  33. Atrocitus says:

As the owner of both a Galaxy Nexus AND an S3 from Verizon, I can tell you that this illustrates that Verizon is either incompetent…or this is deliberate. Not a conspiratist , but if you think about it Verizon has a LOT of Galaxy Note 2’s to push, and Johnny Average consumer is not going to buy a Note when they can get the equally serviceable s3. Hey, I own a business, I can understand where Verizon is coming from…but it is just bad customer service all around. Having been through TWO updates where I am the very last person of everyone I know to receive them, I have come to the conclusion that Verizon;s first interest it to themselves to the detriment of their customers. If I can find a way to get out of my contract I am going to do so. I could care less about their network, or their carrier status…this is inexcusable. And you know what…? I bet they really could care less.

  34. Bruno Valente says:

I Sold my s3 on eBay left Verizon and purchased a yellow Nokia Lumia,920 at att. I never liked Verizon so good riddance. I did love the s3

  35. Scott Ferry says:

I got sick of waiting for Verizon to push Jelly Bean to my S3. I installed the VRBLK1 leak weeks ago. I haven’t had any problems with it at all.

  36. jrcreed says:

I am a verizon gs3 owner and am considering changing carriers! if the biggest carrier cannot be the first to get the update out and or not let there customers know when it will be out then they have a major problem and eventually not be the biggest carrier!

  37. Justin Moyer says:

Owner of VZW S3. Seems like there are too many Android OS’s out there. Android- very unorganized and complicated with its array of products. Lots of unnecessary headache. Samsung may have jumped the gun on the S3 release timing if they say its the latest and greatest phone. Not all of these phones the latest features. Just had to get it out before iPhone 5. Verizon just seems to be falling short. Get the job done, Verizon. Thus far, you have done well with showing you are the best carrier. So it shouldn’t be difficult for you to release the update. I hope there isn’t some dumb corporate relations issue between Verizon and Samsung etc. That would mean customer satisfaction and product quality is taking the back seat… no good. Verizon should have been the first to push Jelly Bean update.

  38. eestubbs104 says:

News flash… I have owned the Verizon HTC Thunderbolt on Verizon, for almost two years now (one of the first) and I have never received the promised updates.

  39. Randal Anderson says:

I was excited about the jelly bean update, but now it doesn’t matter. This just makes you wonder about Verizon. They are pushing the Jelly Bean on all the new razors. This is clearly a marketing scheme on Verizon’s behalf. Seeing that Google owns Motorola there has to be some $ involved the reason this update hasn’t been released. Google needs to be in charge of there own updates to make this an even playing field. Are we being denied of our services we are entitled too? We as Verizon customers pay top $ for the best service, but does this really make them the best? We have to be patient & wait to see what happens next. This can truly effect valued customers with Verizon customers. People will wait out there contracts & bail or not renew to see what happens next!!

  40. Abbies_119 says:

I am a GS3 Verizon customer and am frustrated about this issue. In fact, I just sent customer service an email asking for an explanation of when this update will happen (not that I expect to get any kind of reply other than some pre-made PR response).

  41. Jim Littlejohn says:

I am a long time customer of Verizon but am becoming increasingly frustrated at the attitude shown by Verizon towards it’s customers. The replies I have received from customer service are unacceptable and embarrassing. I will reconsider renewing my contract when the time comes.

  42. john says:

Ive been with verizon for forever. and lately they are really starting to piss me off. by not letting me keep my unlimited data plan and downgrading my gs3. My friends tmobiles gs3 is faster than mine even when se was on 4.0.4. stupid verizon screwed with the phone and runnier it in my opinion. When im up I’m leaving dumbass verizon and going to ATT or Sprint. Cant wait till 2 years. They are so much cheaper too.

  43. Taco John says:

I switched to Verizon when I got my S3. I switched with the impression I would have better coverage than I had with the other carriers but I haven’t noticed much improvement. Not only am I upset by the Jelly Bean delay, but I have been overcharged on EVERY bill I’ve received from them. Their statements are also unnecessarily difficult to figure out. I’ll definitely be leaving Verizon as soon as possible. CHECK YOUR STATEMENTS!

  44. DJARCHER says:

Not thrilled at all that Verizon is so slow at updating their phones. They have enough customers and make enough money to be at the head of the curve at updating instead of last. I can understand they might want to make sure there are no glitches that would make customers unhappy, but last does not cut it in my mind.

  45. UNHAPPY and leaving! says:

I am VERY interested in the Jelly Bean update and Verizon should be embarrassed by how how long it takes them to roll out an update so 1) they can add all of their own bloated crap which just bogs down our systems and 2) by being the last out there to provide the latest and greatest there is. We have the best network but that’s it and I’m seriously considering switching carriers and just try it for a while. I’m fristrated and sick of being last and embarrassed to say I’m still waiting for something every other carrier has delivered. Verizion is NOT number one because of that. What a bunch of liers too.

  46. I have a Verizon GS3 and am pretty frustrated with Verizon. I sent an email to them a while back asking why they haven’t pushed JB to my device yet…the person did not even think that Samsung had made JB yet…WTF! Of course they have it I said…the Stock JB ROM was leaked sometime back in the first part of July so what’s the hold up? Then they just said it wasn’t ready yet…that was about 2 months ago…and STILL no update. If I was not under contract with them I would move to another vendor that can stay current on their Android OS Updates. Other Verizon phones come with JB so why the heck can’t they update their most popular…biggest selling device…it just drives me nuts. I AM ON THE VERGE OF ROOTING MY S3 WITH JB AND SAYING SCREW VERIZON…why the heck not…the S3 is obviously at the very bottom of their list. It’s a good way to piss off your current customers to the point where they don’t resign a contract with your stupid company…and believe me I wont be shy to tell someone how bad Verizon sucks. Even the reception on the phone sucks…can hardly hear anybody now…it was the same way with my Droid Incredible…so it is obviously not the phone but instead a Verizon problem.

I been with Verizon for over 5 years now. I upgrade to the G3S because I didn’t want to lose my unlimited plan back in June. Now they have us wait this long for the Jelly bean update while the rest of the nation has it. This is redonk!! This has been a frustrating roller coaster. Once my contract is up I will also be leaving shitizon!

  49. Randy says:

Well, hopefully my email to Verizon’s CEO about these issues helps speed up the update process. I discussed many key things also such as bloatware and their new pricing structure.
