For buyers after a smartphone with decent specs and a competitive price there are a growing number of handsets to fit the bill. One of these is the Motorola Moto G (2014) that released in September and another is a new arrival for India, the Xiaomi Redmi Note. The Moto G Dual SIM has already been a big success and has found plenty of buyers in India. The Redmi Note is also a dual SIM handset and finally launched in India yesterday with official pricing. The latter comes in both 3G and 4G models, but for this comparison we’re considering the cheaper 3G version. Both are Android handsets that are not too far apart in pricing, so let’s take a look at what they offer in the way of specs.

Processors
The Redmi Note is powered by a 1.7GHz MediaTek 6592 octa-core processor with Mali-450MP4 graphics. The Moto G (2014) Dual SIM has a 1.2GHz Snapdragon 400 quad-core processor and Adreno 305 GPU.

Display
The Xiaomi phone has a 5.5-inch IPS LCD display with resolution of 1280 x 720 and 267 ppi. The Motorola handset has a 5-inch IPD LCD display with 1280 x 720 resolution and 294 ppi.

RAM and Storage
The Redmi Note has 2GB of RAM and 8GB of internal storage that’s expandable via microSD to 32GB. The new Moto G has 1GB of RAM and 8/16GB of internal storage, also expandable to 32GB.

Cameras
The Redmi Note has a 13-megapixel rear camera with autofocus, LED flash and 1080p video capture, and a 5-megapixel front-facing camera. The 2nd generation Moto G has an 8-megapixel rear camera with autofocus, LED flash and 720p video capture, as well as a 2-megapixel front-facing camera.

Battery
The Xiaomi phone has a removable 3200 mAh battery while the Motorola smartphone has a non-removable 2070 mAh battery.

Connectivity

Operating System
The Redmi Note runs Android Jelly Bean-based MIUI version 5. The Moto G 2014 launched on Android 4.4.4 KitKat, upgradable to Android 5.0 Lollipop.

Dimensions and Weight
The Redmi Note measures 154mm x 78.7mm x 9.5mm and weighs 199g. The Moto G measures 141.5mm x 70.7mm x 11mm and weighs 149g.

Price
The Xiaomi Redmi Note 3G is officially priced at Rs. 8,999 and registrations for the first flash sale on Flipkart begin today at 6pm. The Moto G (2014) Dual SIM launched at Rs. 12,999 for the 16GB model, which is available at various retailers in India.

This specs look throws up some interesting pointers as despite its cheaper price tag the Redmi Note has plenty of advantages over the Moto G 2nd gen. These include a faster processor that’s also an octa-core, a larger display, more RAM, better camera capabilities, and a higher capacity battery that’s also removable.

On the other hand the Moto G has a higher level of internal storage and is notably lighter than the Redmi Note, and it also has FM radio. Another point in its favour is that it runs the latest version of Android and Motorola has been very reliable lately for pushing out speedy updates. Also many people simply prefer the Motorola branding.

Your final choice will also come down to your choice of handset design and you should consider build quality and after-sales service as well. Of course even if you decide that the Redmi Note is the one for you, it could be a little difficult to get hold of if availability of the Xiaomi Mi4 and Redmi 1S was anything to go by.
