British Telecom is planning to upgrade their broadband network to the tune of £1.5 billion, and was given a boost when the telecoms watchdog stated they will not hinder BT from making a return on their investment.

BT’s plan is in line with the British government’s plan to bring access to next generation broadband at ten times the speeds than those currently available to British homes.

The telecoms regulator, Ofcom, gave BT free rein yesterday to set their prices to which rivals Carphone Warehouse, and BSkyB will have to fork out in order to gain access to BT’s improved network.

Ofcom’s concession to BT is to help the company to implement plans to construct a new super fast network that will take in ten million homes in the UK by 2012.
