Not that I have to many complaints about the storm prior to this OS update (except for the laggy response and unprovoked intermittent freezing). I noticed that this update completely cured what ailed the storm. Now the phone (including its touch screen) is much more responsive, and user friendly. I guess the only negative aspect of the OS release would be the fact that it took RIM & Verizon too long to release such a very needed and critical update.

Well I have not completed the update yet but I am in the process of doing so. The only issue is that it needs room so I had to delete some applications to provide enough room for the update. But prior to this update the storm as VERY SLOW and I wanted to change phones and my calls dropped all the time..and the transition from veritcal to horizontal view was very static…so hopefully with this new update that all problems have been resolved.

  3. Jay says:

This new update, so far, seems to work much better than the previous version. The touchscreen seems more responsive and accurate. The refresh rate also seems improved. I have not yet tested the battery drainage yet. I would be happier with an improvement, but would not be dissapointed is remains the same, as long as we did not return to the poor battery drain of the earlier firmware.

  4. This update will eliminate all of your contacts, address’ and music from the Storm.
Went to Verizon and the update is so new, the don’t know S$%# about what to do about this problem.
    Beware of this new update!!!!!!

Not true John, NO contacts or music was lost!
Maybe you had a leaked version that caused a problem with the official upgrade. I like the portrait keyboard and all the numbers and symbols on one page when in num lock.
What a Happy Happy Day!!! :o)

  6. The update took 4 hours to load from start to finish. I too had to delete the almost all the photos, videos and messages to get it to start loading…

I was so-so at best about my storm going into the update (it was slow to respond, froze for no reason, and was fincky with changing views – oh and weak battery!) … that said so far the phone seems to be much faster and more responsive after the upload. Let’s see if it holds or gets worse. All in all with 1/2 day going I am pleased with the new OS but it should have come out earlier.

PS I did not lose any contacts or my twitterberry with the DL.

This update is a MUST! First of all, be smart and use the desktop manager to backup your phone before you install the update. It will delete all of your contacts, etc. and then reinstall them. However, I (like the other John) encountered a problem where my contacts would not reinstall. So, once again, back up your phone first.
But, all that aside, the update is wonderful. Faster speed, more responsive and “smarter” typing, more responsive accelerometer, better memory usage. There are only three noteworthy cons I have found. One, the battery still leaks pretty quick. I’m not feeling any improvement there. Two, for those of you with “today” themes, you may have noticed that when you selected an item in a today menu, hit reply and then turned the phone to type on a full keyboard, that the landscape view went back to the home screen instead of a keyboard. This was a problem RIM was very aware of in the old update (a lot of builders complained). However, for whatever reason they still haven’t resolved it. And Three, the lock screen still takes too long to load and unload.
Still, this firmware is worth it.

I’d be curious to know if anyone has had a successful update that didn’t involve a data restore. 1 OTA failure, which then turned into another failure on desktop upgrade (I did get the new software installed, but had to restore all the data). Same with the wife’s (except the OTA never started, so just gave up on that).

  9. Bob says:

This update did not delete any of my contacts, address, music or anything else previously loaded on the Storm. The update went quite smooth really. You will however need to re-register certain applications, so hopefully you kept the necessary info. The phone definitely seems to be operating quicker. so far, so good.

  10. Tom says:

Just finished the update and it did NOT delete my contacts. (backup your phone first just in case). Still not as fast as I’d like, but it’s a 100% improvement. Less lag is the most noticeable feature.

  11. Nikki says:

I had no problem with the update it took about 10 min using Desktop manager. The phone responds much better and I enjoy the improvementns in the keyboard. I wish they would have added on more features or I can find a list of the improvments.

  12. Jonathan says:

I like many of you had to delete or unistall many applications prior to beginning the over-the-air installation. This was frustrating to say the least. The installation of the new OS took way to long and did drain the battery rapidly (was at work and forgot my charger). So far the new OS seems to have cured most of the issues that I was having such as lag time, freezing, dropped call, and screen views. There still seems to be a slight lag time between certain applications but no where near as long as with the previous OS. I can say that I am much happier now with my storm than I have been in previous weeks. I was this close to running out an buying the Iphone!

PS – I did not loose any contacts, email accounts, photos, or music (must have caught a break there) however I am frustrated because I did not keep a few of the codes needed for programs I have purchased and will need to repurchase in order to get them to work in full access mode).

I hope everyone has good luck with the new OS and only time will tell if it was worth the long wait!

  13. Sorry guys,
I live in Fort Lauderdale, FL, USA. Our version was different than the UK version.
Here in America, our version is for Verizon, and I guess we got a different update.
My apologies for thinking that all the versions were the same.
According to the store where I got the Storm. There have been only a couple of people who came in and had the same problem as I.
Had to bring in my old phone and had the contacts reloaded. Then they found out that the download hid alot of the functions, ie, making some of the functions under “personnel”, which hides the application.
All is fixed now, but it took about 1/2 a day to get it done correctly.

Remember to backup your phone before doing any update.

  14. B says:

I didn’t have any problems with the upload. Also, I did not have to get rid of things to make space even though i was asked to. I just did a soft reset and that gave me enough space. My girlfriend did the same thing.

*Neither one of us lost any contacts, music, photos, videos or emails.

  15. Chris says:

Will deleting the old OS give the Storm more memory on my phone. I downloaded the new application and it killed my memory. I was running at 44 and now it is 20. I don’t have a lot of applications to delete so was wondering if the new application drains the memory. Help

    Thank you

  16. Ed says:

Two Storms. Downloaded to both OA. Upgraded from .70, Now both homes are eating batteries. Can’ t go all day without recharging at least once. Also did not fix the glitch which cuts the phone off when you put it in the holster while on a call using the bluetooth headset. Setting auto cutoff to ”never” did not fix this and neither did the update.

  17. Lusus says:

Love the new firmware! Camera, media, and browser are all much faster. Accellerometers work beautifully and screen rotation is much faster and smoother. Have not locked up my blackberry yet, whereas it used to happen three or four times a day. This has to be the absolute best of the three I’ve gotten so far. Definitely a must-have for Storm users.

  18. romancia says:

4.7.0.148 for storm so far no problem…it’s faster and more smooth…the only problem is when I charge battery I have to pull it first so that the metter will progress otherwise it stays.

  19. romancia says:

I had no loss BB messeger and phone contact, appointment, 3rd application, even sms and email histroy conversation when I upgrade my storm from 75 to 148…the only missing was history conversation in BB messanger

  20. TGM says:

I had just decided to trash my Storm when this came out. I did the backup on the computer, and it did restore my contacts, however I had to load a prior backup to get my calender, memo, and task list back.

My biggest problem now is that I lost all my apps, and in addition lost my browser and application loader, so I cant even get to the internet to get my stuff back!

  21. I downloaded the upgrade–meant to do it from the desktop but did it from the phone, and it only took about 45 minutes. At first it told me I had to delete 22 MB of data to download it, so I moved some pics from the phone to my card, and it still said I needed to remove 22 MB. So I just took out the battery and tried again, and everything worked fine.

I forgot to back up too, but I still have everything–contacts, browser history, email settings, SMS, Visual Voice Mail, etc. I’ve had to put in my password/passcode for a few apps, but everything is there. I haven’t used it enough yet to tell if the performance is better yet.

This is my second BB Storm. I turned the first one in because it was performing so badly. I was about to turn this one in for another one and when then third one acted up, get a new phone altogether (non BB Storm). So hopefully this will solve the problems. I love all the features of the Storm–a lot–except for the fact that for all practical purposes you can’t use it as a phone (dropped calls, no one can understand you, etc). The slowness I could live with, but that would be nice if this upgrade fixes that too.

  22. Deezet says:

I am here in South Africa and would like to know if it is safe to download the Firmware OS 4.7.0.148 for BlackBerry Storm 9530 from UK or Verizon. Please someone help me with this one because SA Vodacom does not have the download link to the above mentioned update. My e-mail is deezet@live.com.

Thanks a lot, looking forward to any kind of help.

  23. WK says:

I successfully updated the OS from Verizon. However, my previous version had Chinese input which was gone after the update. Is there anything I can do to have Chinese input function back or there us no such function in this version??
